Learn More About Invasive Species Control Using Goats

By Jessica Cox

There are different species known to develop exponentially and even prosper in severe weather conditions. This makes them difficult to handle. Different research institutes and state departments have been heading the search to find a reliable and effective solution to manage species that are not native. A few institutes have recommended invasive species control using goats.

Invasive forms can be plants or animals that are not native to specific location but causes adverse effect to the bioregion they invade. They threaten the biological diversity and lead to land loss in various land masses. In a situation where non -native plant species have covered a vast area of land use of browsers can be very effective in suppressing the vegetation.

Nevertheless, this might just be restricted to the utilization by the goats because some types are toxic. However, goats are famous for possessing an innate capacity to resist poisonous enzymes in deadly vegetation. Thus, they are able to survive in places where other animals are unable to. A whole flock of sheep can consume poisonous vegetation within an area because of this ability. Thus, they can be adopted as a control instrument.

There are other animals that do not digest seeds. The seeds are removed as they were swallowed and they germinate making control of such forms of plants more challenging. Goats have a special digestion system that can digest the seed to ensure that they do not germinate. A flock is the best way to ensure that once the plants are fed on their seeds will be damaged and the plants will not be able to regrow again.

This technique is extremely cost-effective because the flock can be hired for people who do not have many goats. Also, individuals who are incapable of purchasing a flock can hire them so as to graze them on their farm. Following the consumption of the non-native species, they can be given back to their owner. Moreover, renting a flock can be relatively affordable because the owner gains food for his flock in the process. In contrast to applying chemicals, utilizing the flock is normally effective and cheaper.

As compared to other biological methods, they can be advantageous in that they convert brush and weeds into saleable product, and they graze concurrently with cattle. Goats are also more tolerant to secondary plants compounds. Though they do not graze uniformly they can reach taller branches by climbing or standing on hind leg. They also have narrow strong mouth that strip leaves and chew branches.

Typically, goats are social animals that move in masses. They restrict the growth of the plant causing its death. It is unlikely for them to cause soil erosion. Instead, they are known to elevate soil fertility contrary to other big hooved animals. Their chewing is much better and they productively remove unwanted vegetation. This technique saves the environment because chemicals are not transmitted into the air as is the case of herbicides.

Due to various protocol signed by various leaders in the world on environmental control it is wise to adopt biological control methods like use of flocks in suppressing growth of invasive plants. This is because it is economical compared to mechanical methods.
