Relevance Of Learning Games For Kindergarten And 1st Grade

By Christine Watson

It is very acceptable that a teacher or instructor uses different approaches when they engage with different types of learners. It is for this reason that university and high schools, for example, do not teach the same. For kids, their sharp and eager minds are always attracted to all what is around. The effectiveness of learning games for kindergarten and 1st grade has made all people to use this methodology.

Firstly each game that is designed for learning is aimed at giving the players a unique skill be it academic or life skill. The social aspect of kids needs to be sharpened since they have come from different home. These games enable them to interact, and through this, they can socialize. They will eventually develop the attitude of accepting and understanding those around them.

Almost all games have a competition factor on them where there are winner and losers. As they play in teams, they develop a teamwork mentality that is vital for their entire course of learning. Also, they learn to accept the results of any competition where winning should not be a daily occurrence. As they feel bad when they lose they learn to work hard towards success.

They all have instruction of which have to be given orally by the teacher. Without the instructions the game is unplayable. By this, the kids will develop the curiosity of listening everything related to the game so that they can be assured of a win. Listening is important since more than 85% of delivery is done verbally.

Numbering is another are that has benefited a lot from this unique method of teaching our new learners. Off field gaming exercises and mostly board games have the ability to enhance the numbering and counting skills of kids. There are those that force one to count steps and add marks which by far, they sharpen the basic mathematical operation of these kids.

Also, its important that reading is achieved through the easiest way possible. Studies have shown that reading is one of the challenging areas that kids have in their early learning. However, board games such as monopoly can be very effective in helping them develop their reading skills. A combination of images or colors and words will be helpful in ensuring that they learn much easier.

The earlier mentioned are not the only benefits. The list is endless. However, generating these benefits can only be determined by the teacher. They should ensure that they settle for games that are very interesting to the kids so that all of them can enjoy participating. It becomes unnecessary if there is a section of the class which participates dormant since they will be left behind.

The history of kindergarten games has been there for long. There is no point in time that this system has yielded negative results. However, an important thing to be taken into account when choosing the game is the kind of kids. The age and level of learning will determine the skills required and the game type to be deployed.
