Use Erosion Control Blankets To Solve Erosion Problems

By Harold Harris

The problem of spoil wearing away can be a massive problem and it can be expensive to sort. It can easy but costly to prevent soil being washed away. Erosion control blankets can be a good way to slow down the flow of water from the area where there is a problem of soil being washed away.

These blankets are able to mask the slopes in an effective way especially where there is heavy flows that are prone to erosion. These blankets are normally made from substances that are biodegradable such as straw or coconut. These materials are woven and are meant to slow down the rate at which the water flows from the slope that is needing to be protected. These products can be purchased in a range of different sizes.

It is easy to install the blanket although it is labour intensive. When you have fitted it you will need to ensure that the water is flowing slowly on the top of the blanket. If the water is not able to flow slowly then there will the blanket will not work in the manner that it is meant to. When you are going to install it dig a small channel where the blanket can be placed so that it makes a trench. Once you have done this fold an edge of the blanket underneath and use staples to secure it in place.

Using this can help to provide an element of protection for to the soil and it promote the growth of vegetation on the slope. It can also help to make a channel in areas where there is low water flow and where the ground mulch and base ground seedlings are. These products will last for about a year.

In some cases these soil erosion blankets can be used a temporary solution to stabilise and protect the soil. Protecting the soil will decrease the amount of soil compaction and crusting and increase the infiltration. These blankets also have the ability to help conserve the moisture in the soil.

These products can also be utilised as a way to assist in the reduction of desiccation and protection of the seeds from predators whilst also allowing evaporation via the insulation from the soil and the seed environment. Although there is many other uses for these products the main one is still to prevent soil from erosion.

One of the main benefits of these blankets is they can help to provide immediate stability for the soil to prevent erosion and it will be able to provide fantastic cover for at least one year. Prior to the blanket being installed allow time to ensure that the ground is smooth so that it is able to lie flat on the surface.

Taking time to do the preparation will ensure that the blanket is in contact with the soil. It is possible to secure the blanket using staples. The installation of the blanket can be costly and this is certainly the case when it comes to labour.
